Using homemade food-grade paints, soy paint, or Tempera paint is another alternative that will be safer to apply to your pet hamster cage for decorating.

Here are the key elements to look for when shopping for rodent-safe paint for your furry hamsters and rabbits:

Water-based or wax/acrylic
VOC-free (volatile organic compounds)
Free from carcinogens, petrochemicals, heavy metals, or creosote

If you do not want to use Mod Podge sealer, 100% linseed oil can also be used to protect and seal the painted wooden cage of your animals. Apply it evenly with a brush or a rag and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.

The bottom line

If a product is labeled “safe for children,” it’s generally a good indication that it’s non-toxic and should be suitable for use with your hamsters too. But as a general rule of thumb, you should only paint the outer surfaces of animal cages, hutches, or coops with water-based pet-safe paints.

Can Kitchen Paint Be Used in Other Rooms?

If you’ve recently painted your kitchen, chances are good that you have some leftover paint in your storage. And when you see all those leftover gallons of perfectly usable paint, your first thought is, “Hey! I could use this extra paint in my living room, bedroom, or bathroom.”

But wait – Before using that kitchen paint in any other room, check whether it’s a wise decision to do so or not.

I talked to other paint experts and did some digging myself. And based on my experiences and findings, I’ve got many things you need to know about painting cross-rooms with leftover kitchen paint.

First and foremost, kitchen paint is much like other paints (somewhat superior), so it can be used in any room, including the bedroom, living room, bathroom, attic, storage room, etc.

In fact, paints labeled “kitchen paint” are thicker, easier to apply, and do the job well. But it may be expensive to use in other areas of your home because it’s designed to be more moisture and oil-resistant and comes at premium pricing.

That said, you should never try vice versa, i.e., do not skimp on quality by using regular paint in your kitchen. Since your kitchen walls and other surfaces need tough coatings, only choose a durable paint brand that will withstand constant exposure to water and grease.

Kitchen Paint vs. Regular Paint

For starters, kitchen paints tend to be more expensive but durable than regular paints because of the unique additives, polymers, and pigments added to them.

Just think of all the splatters your kitchen walls may experience if you accidentally splash tomato sauce, oils, juices, or smoothies while preparing in the mixer early morning. All these substances are prone to staining walls, and regular paint may not withstand all of that messes as effectively as kitchen paint.

Aside from the price and durability, there is also a difference in finish.

Most kitchen paints are satin, semi-gloss, or high-gloss, while regular ones used in the bedroom or living room can have a more matte or flat finish. This is because semi-gloss and high-gloss paints are easier to clean – and in a room like a kitchen, that’s important.

Using Kitchen Paints in the Bedroom

Your kitchen is mostly smaller than a bedroom or living area, which means a gallon of leftover paint will likely cover a small wall section or furniture in another room.

By that, I don’t mean to say you can’t use kitchen paint in other rooms like bedrooms or living rooms. You can use them, but you may need to mix them with other paints and colors to create a custom hue, which will, again, be a costly endeavor.

So, it might be much better to buy a new can of paint that’s the exact color you want for your room. However, if it’s for a furniture piece, an accent wall in the bedroom, or any other tiny area – yeah, go ahead, as one gallon will probably suffice.

Using Kitchen-Specific Paints in Bathroom

Bathroom surfaces, like your kitchen walls, take a lot of wear and tear from hard water stains, soap, shampoo, hair oils, and steam damage. Many times, there can also be ventilation issues since windows may not be as accessible in these rooms.

Since paints designed for kitchen areas are excellent at resisting mold and mildew, they are ideal for bathroom walls and areas with high humidity or constant exposure to water and grease.

So, if you’re looking for paint that will last longer and stand up to wear and tear in your bathroom, kitchen paint is a good option. However, if you’re looking for an affordable paint that’s easier to apply on a bathroom ceiling and doesn’t require as many coats, regular paint can be a better choice.

Should My Kitchen And Living Room Be the Same Color or Different?

While you don’t have to use the same colors throughout your home, sticking to a similar color scheme helps create a sense of unity between rooms.

But be aware drastic changes in shades can also be jarring and unpleasant. So it’s best to pick the colors specifically for each room that is complementary yet still unique.

For instance, your kitchen and living room could be different colors but within the same family of colors, like a warm yellow for the kitchen and a golden amber hue for the living room. Or you could use different shades of blues or greens to create contrast but still maintain a sense of flow between the two rooms.

You could also use light blue in your kitchen and a darker blue in your living room. Or, you could use white in your kitchen and light gray in your living room.

More or less, this is a matter of personal preference, which means you can carry the same color through both rooms for a sense of cohesion, or you can use slightly different colors to create a bit of contrast.

My Advice to Pick the Color Scheme for Your House

A favorite method veteran decorators use to produce congruent decorations throughout the house is choosing three to five colors.

One of these hues will be the room’s primary color and make up around 60% percent of it. Another shade takes up 30%, while the last appears in only 10% of the area.

By mixing different permutations of these colors in every room, you add contrast between them without using too many shades and making the space seem overwhelmed or gaudy.

If you’re unsure, you can always consult a professional painter or interior designer for the best way to achieve your desired look.

The bottom line

While there’s no reason you cannot use kitchen paint in other rooms, it’s important to understand the differences between the kitchen and regular paint so you can choose the best option for your needs.

Can Flex Seal Be Used On Tiled Shower Floor?

Cracks in shower floor tiles are inevitable, but repairing them on time is essential to avoid further damage and replacement.

Fortunately, Flex Seal’s products (like Flex Shot and Flex Glue) come with water-repellent and mildew-resistant properties that can be used as a measure to prevent water from seeping through these cracks and causing more damage.

And because it provides a water-tight seal to prevent leaks, it’s an excellent alternative to a silicone-based sealant for a variety of other bathroom applications.

How to Use Flex Shot On Shower Floor?

Flex Shot is easy to apply, and you have a choice of four colors: white, black, clear, or almond.

So, regardless of your bathroom color scheme, you’ll be able to find a match.

One Flex Shot will cover up to 40 linear feet, depending on how thick the bead you apply. So if you buy a pack of two (usually available at Amazon and other stores), you can most likely work on any project, small or large.

1- Remove Existing Caulk and Clean

To apply, start by removing the existing caulk you have using a caulk remover and razor scraper – never use Flex Seal products over old caulking.

Once removed, thoroughly clean the cracks with soapy water and a brush to remove any dirt, mildew, or debris. Use vinegar or rubbing alcohol cleaner if required, as this will help the new Flex Shot sealant to adhere better.

Let the area dry completely before moving on to the next step. Flex Shot will certainly work on wet surfaces, but it works better on dry ones.

2- Apply Flex Shot to the Cracked Shower Floor

The Flex Shot comes with an extension tube that you can screw onto the end of the applicator, which is helpful for hard-to-reach areas like corners.

You can cut the extension tube to your desired thickness: cutting close to the base dispenses out a thicker line of Flex Shot, whereas cutting towards the tip would help make a thinner line.

To use Flex Shot, press down on the nozzle and evenly fill the cracked tiles area you are caulking.

After you finish applying the Flex Shot sealant, use your index finger to smooth it out so that it fills in every nook and cranny of the shower tile with cracks and gaps.

Once you’re done, wipe away any leftover product, and allow the sealant about 20 minutes to dry before touching it. If you feel there are any areas left, apply some more sealant and let it sit for 48-72 hours to cure fully.

Tip: After you’re done, release a bit of the sealant out of the end of the tube so that a plug forms. This will keep your Flex Shot from drying out when not in use. If you ever need to reuse it again, just remove the plug before application.

What’s the Difference Between Flex Seal and Flex Shot?

Flex Seal is basically a brand and an umbrella term used to refer to products the company sells.

When we talk about using Flex Seal, most commonly, it’s a liquid rubber, glue, or a paste in a can (or in buckets) that is sprayed or applied as a thick liquid to fix small cracks, holes, and leaks.

It looks like thick liquid rubber while wet but dries to form a thicker watertight, and flexible seal.

Flex Shot comes from the same product line, with an easy-use nozzle attached, making it much simpler to apply than its counterpart.

Although there is a difference, both Flex Shot as well as Flex Seal Glue works very well to create a waterproof bond on a variety of surfaces, including cement, concrete, tile, glass, plastic, aluminum, porcelain, wood, drywall, rubber, and others.

Just make sure the surface is clean and free of dirt and grease before you use them to create a stronger seal.

Is Flex Seal Better than Silicone?

Unlike silicone, a type of synthetic rubber that looks and feels like real rubber when dried, Flex Seal’s products, like Flex Shot, Glue, Paste, Spray, etc., are products that solidify as it dries.

Flex Shot, in particular, is a rubber-based sealant that creates a much stronger bond as compared to silicone caulking and is, therefore, a better product for fixing your large shower tile gaps or cracks.

Flex Shot comes with easy-to-use applicators built in, as opposed to caulk and silicone sealants which would normally require a caulking gun. It also lasts much longer than your typical caulk or silicone sealant, with less cracking over time.

That said, Flex Shot may not be the right product for you if there are black molds present in your bathroom, as it does not include features to fight this common problem.

Also, because Flex Shot is very noxious, please make sure you have ventilation set up before using it. If possible, avoid using this product to fix minor hairline cracks on your tiles.

The bottom line

Flex Shot (by Flex Seal Family of Products) is an excellent product for caulking showers, baths, and cracked shower floors in your home, pool, RV, and motorhome.

The product is easy-to-use, creates a waterproof seal, and lasts much longer than traditional caulk or silicone sealants. It also doesn’t require a caulking gun like some of its competitors.

One downside, however, is that it doesn’t include features to fight mold, so if you have this problem in your bathroom, Flex Shot may not be the right product for you.

Is Turpentine Oil Good to Use on Wood?

While it’s safe to use for removing paints and other finishes from wood, when applied directly to wood surfaces or left on for an extended time, turpentine will damage your furniture.

This is because turpentine comes with caustic properties, which, when used directly on wood, harms the natural oils present in it, thereby dulling its color and shine.

You can only apply undiluted turpentine to unfinished wood if you need to create a bleached and weathered look. However, using petroleum-based solvents designed explicitly for weathering look of the wood will allow you to achieve the same results without risking damage to the material.

So, it’s good to avoid using pure un-mixed turpentine oil altogether OR mix it with linseed oil before using it on your wood surfaces.

Below in this guide, I will provide you with some incredible tips and bits of advice on how to use turpentine to clean wood and as a finishing agent by mixing it with linseed oil.

Turpentine Oil

Turpentine, a paint and finish stripping product, is a harsh solvent derived from pine wood chips or the resin of certain pine trees (from various species of Pinus).

To make turpentine oil, the chips or the resin obtained by tapping pine trees are heated. The derived chemical is then distilled.

While still available, it’s not as commonly used due to human health concerns of negative impacts from inhaling toxic Turpentine fumes.

But under all the safety warnings and careful usage, turpentine oil is a powerful paint solvent that still finds use in industrial and craft applications.

Uses of Turpentine Oil

Though frequently used in the art industry, turpentine can also be mixed with house paints and stains to thin it out. Many times it’s also used to soften painted or shellacked wood finishes and make them somewhat more manageable.

If you want to remove shellac, paint, or other varnishes from a wooden surface, turpentine is an ideal solution – it softens the paint and allows you to wipe it away easily. Additionally, because the paint acts as a barrier between the wood and turpentine, using this oil has minimal impact on your surfaces.

Mixing and Using Linseed Oil and Turpentine

Due to humans’ health hazards of repeatedly coming into contact with turpentine fumes, mineral spirits are now essentially replacing turpentine as a thinner for paint applications.

But if you’re looking for a finish with an old-world look, a linseed oil + turpentine wood finish can’t be beaten.

Here’s how to mix and use linseed oil and turpentine on wood…

Step 1- Prepare the wood surface

Before beginning the project, you must clean the wood of dirt, mold, and algae. If you plan to finish your blonde wood furniture surface with this finish, for example, simply a dish soap cleaner should do the trick.

But remember, you must use this treatment on untreated or unfinished wood. This means removing any paint or wax before applying the treatment. The oil can’t penetrate the wood deeply if you don’t do so.

You may remove the paint or varnish with pressure washing or can use a proper stripping chemical to get the job done. After cleanup, the wood must be dry before moving on so that treatment can penetrate deeply.

Step 2- Mix linseed oil and turpentine

Adding solvents like turpentine to linseed oil will make it dry more quickly, making the product more useful. But the key to getting the right finish here is properly mixing linseed oil with turpentine.

50% linseed oil mixed with 50% turpentine oil should give you the desired results in most cases.
But you can add a bit of extra turpentine if you want the mixture to dry more quickly when applied as a wood finish.
For example, a mix of 40% linseed oil and 60% turpentine should work well if you’re looking for a quicker drying time.

Step 3- Apply the mixture with a brush or a rag

After mixing linseed oil and turpentine in a proper ratio, apply the mixture to the wood surface with a brush or a clean rag.

Use a disposable foam brush applicator tool if you have a large area to cover. But avoid using a paint roller as this may result in an uneven finish if not done correctly.

Step 4- Let the turpentine oil wood finish dry completely

Once you’ve applied the mixture, let it dry for at least 12-24 hours.

I think you should give it 24 hours to dry completely for a more durable finish. Then, apply a second coat if you need to get an even more long-lasting finish.

Curing the finish might take a few extra hours, so ensure that the area is well-ventilated and you do not allow heavy foot traffic on the finished product for about 36 to 48 hours.

How often should you treat your wood with linseed oil and turpentine?

It is determined by the type of wood you have. Generally, a good sign is to look at the wood’s condition. If the natural beauty of your wood begins to fade, you may reapply it.

In most situations, you’ll need to apply it twice a year. If it’s not possible, simply do it every year.

Where to Use Wood Treatment with Turpentine and Linseed Oil?

As I mentioned before, it’s best to avoid using pure turpentine oil directly on the wood surface. That said, linseed oil + turpentine mixed in the proper ratio can help keep any wood surface in good shape. Plus, the natural beauty of the wood isn’t hidden by this method, whether you use it on softwood or hardwood.

You can use this wood treatment finish on smaller objects like birdhouses, garden sheds, windowsills, furniture, wooden toys, knives, tools, turned objects, etc.

Or against weathering, UV damage splitting, warping, fungi, and mold growth for surfaces like a deck, porches, stairs, and fences you need to protect and preserve.

Just let the finish dry for at least 12 hours before using the treated area. With proper care, your treated wood surfaces can last for years.

Can You Refinish or Polish a Petrified Wood (Tips and Strategies)

Despite its name, petrified wood is not wood but stone. And in my opinion, it is one of the unique minerals on our planet.

While smaller, flawed, or low-quality petrified wood pieces may be worthless, a high-quality petrified wood log might sell for several hundred to thousands of dollars. If you own such a high-quality piece or have found it somewhere, you are in luck.

Maybe you will consider refinishing or polishing your petrified wood to increase its value. But wait, that would be a big mistake because the value of petrified wood is in its natural state – it’s the process of fossilization that makes it so unique and exciting.

So don’t try to refinish or polish your petrified wood – just enjoy it as it is. But still, if you are not convinced, you can try cleaning and polishing it without using any paint, stain, or other chemicals.

Below in this detailed (but interesting) article, I will discuss more on how to clean and polish petrified wood without damaging its properties and value. And later, we will also cover some history and current uses of this piece for your home decor purposes.

How to Clean and Polish Your Petrified Wood?

Beautifying and refinishing the piece of found petrified wood is often a two-step process, i.e., cleaning and polishing.

But you may sometimes need to cut or carve the stone, which will require proper skills and tools. So, I will not recommend cutting, shaping, or carving the piece unless you are very confident about your skills.

But otherwise, here are the steps to clean and polish your petrified wood…

Cleaning Petrified Wood

The first step is to remove any dirt, grime, or debris that might be collected on the petrified wood for ages – it comes directly from nature and is likely to be quite dirty.

The best way to clean petrified wood is to soak it in a bucket of warm water and then scrub it with a soft brush.
Use mild soap if you want, but make sure to rinse the piece thoroughly to remove all the soap residue.
After rinsing, dry the piece using a soft, lint-free cotton cloth.

Remember, you can use household products such as apple cider vinegar for cleaning the dirt or stains that are too stubborn on petrified wood, but it could dissolve minerals such as calcite.

Only if you are pretty sure that your piece does not have any such minerals can you proceed with adding a few drops of apple cider vinegar to a bucket and soak the piece for a few hours before rinsing and drying.

TIP: Do not use any scourers such as steel wool or harsh chemicals such as bleach or harsh detergents, as they can damage your valuable piece of colored petrified wood.

Polishing Petrified Wood by Hand and Sandpaper

Polishing the raw petrified wood by hand, if done right, will make the piece shine and bring out its natural beauty while also increasing its overall resale value.

Start with a lower grit (#220) fine sandpaper, and work your way up to a higher grit, such as 400 (extra fine), to polish the piece of petrified carefully.
Use a few drops of water to lubricate the sandpaper, if needed, and to avoid the wood surface getting overheated during the hand-polishing process.

Polishing Petrified Wood With Handheld Wet Polisher and Dremel

Here are some tips to get started…

Use a diamond polishing pad kit with different grits such as 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800.
Starting with the lower grits, work your way up to the higher ones.
Make sure to go slowly at first and increase the speed only when you are comfortable with grinding and polishing.
After you are done, rinse the piece thoroughly in clean water and dry it using a soft, lint-free cotton cloth.
Once the piece is dry, use a Dremel tool (either with a soft brush attachment or a felt polishing wheel) to buff and shine your petrified wood.
It’s good to start with the brush attachment on your Dremel to remove debris, then switch to the polishing wheel for a final shine.

If you need to cut or shape petrified wood, it’s best to use a wet saw (tile saw) or a high-powered Dremel with a proper bit.

These tools are designed with special features that keep everything in place while still providing enough pressure that will help prevent the valuable piece of raw petrified wood from cracking or breaking before you plan to polish it.

What is Petrified Wood – Where to Use it in My Home?

Petrified wood is a type of fossilized wood where all the organic matter has been replaced with minerals (usually quartz) while retaining the original wood’s external form.

Petrified wood can be dated back millions of years and is found in various parts of the globe, including the US, UK, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, etc.

The most famous petrified wood deposits are in the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona (Petrified Forest National Park) and New Mexico.

Petrified wood makes a great conversation starter and can add a touch of class to any room. So, if you have that big, ugly rock you found in your backyard, here are a few creative ideas for ways to use it in your home:

In the bathroom – on a shelf above the toilet.
In the reading nook, tucked into a corner with some plants.
In the entryway, on a small table to catch keys and mail.
Use it as a doorstop to keep your doors from slamming shut.
As a paperweight to keep your magazines from sliding off the coffee table.
On a side table in the living room next to the lamp. Or on the windowsill in the kitchen to add a splash of color.

Wherever you put it, a piece of petrified wood will surely add beauty and interest to your home. Just make sure you clean and polish it using the right methods and techniques.

Why is Petrified Wood Valuable – How Much is My Piece Worth?

The piece of petrified wood is valuable for two reasons –

First, it is quite rare. It’s not something you can find anywhere, and even if you find it, it’s not likely to be of good quality.
Second, raw petrified wood is naturally beautiful. The colors and patterns created by the mineral replacement process are simply stunning, and no two pieces are exactly alike.

Depending on the piece’s size, weight, color, and condition, it may range from a few dollars to a couple hundred or even thousands. And that’s the reason it’s extensively used in jewelry, sculptures, and as a decorative element in homes and offices.

To find out if it’s a genuinely rare piece of petrified wood and how much your piece is worth, you can take it to a local jeweler, appraiser, or gemologist

When finishing wooden wainscoting, this means that, whether you plan to paint or stain it, this step should be completed beforehand to make things easier.

It’s also critical to ensure that the entire tongue part of the wooden wainscoting is covered. Since wood can shrink after it has been installed, any gaps will be more noticeable once the paint or stain has dried.

If you’re not finishing your wood wainscoting and are instead going for a natural look, it’s still important to at least seal the molding before installation.

After all, sealing is a pretty quick process and will protect the wood from moisture or rot over time.

Benefits of Painting Wainscot before Installation

Painting your panels before they hit the wall is a classic “work smarter, not harder” move.

What Paint to Use on Polymer Clay and How?

Painting on polymer clay is a fun, creative, and safe project because you can technically use any type of paint with color combinations of your choice to create unique designs and patterns.

However, I think, it’s best to use high-quality heavy-body acrylic paint on polymer clay as it comes with a thicker consistency and is specifically made for crafts that include polymer materials.

For beginners, it’s good to go for a simple colorful design using a paintbrush. But if you have the proper skills, you can choose something more complicated, like adding textures and details like flowers, leaves, letters, or alphabets, using a small brush, dotting tool, or even a toothpick.

Once you have finished applying the paint, let the polymer clay dry completely. Depending on the thickness of the paint and the variety of paint you have used, it may take a couple of hours to dry. If the climate is humid, you can use a hairdryer (at a low setting) to speed up the drying process if you want.

Step 5- Add the sealer to the painted clay mold

After completely drying the paint, protect your painted design by spraying an acrylic-based sealant on the finished clay mold.

Glazes and spray varnishes are also best to use and are readily available in craft stores near you. Be sure to choose the sealant that’s compatible with the clay and the type of paint you have used.

After the application, let the sealant dry completely which could take 4-6 hours, depending on the sealant and the thickness of the layer.

Do You Need to Fire Polymer Clay in a Kiln?

Unlike regular air-dry clay, polymer clay is much easier to work with, and it doesn’t require firing in a kiln. You can fire it in your kitchen oven at a temperature that is safe for food.

But remember, polymer clay is not food safe and should not come in contact with food. This means you shouldn’t use it for making utensils, bowls, or mugs. You can, however, decorate these items using paintable polymer clay.

Additional Tips for Adding Textures to the Polymer Clay

Adding textures can be a bit tricky, but with patience and practice, you can get one step ahead by adding them to your polymer clay creations using tools like a rolling pin tool or a sheeter.

Using these tools, cut shapes from the sheet of clay, or you can make some creative designs like birds, flowers, toys, etc., to add to the surface before painting.

If you plan to add these effects, paint them differently from the background. I would suggest using metallic paints that will give your textured clay a beautiful shiny appearance that pop.

A few other products you can use creatively to create a vivid color contrast are Pearl-Ex powders, mica flakes, chalk pastels, stamping inks, dyes, and even glitter.

Stencils, masks, and different beautiful shapes of glass can also be used to spruce up your polymer clay creations before painting. After adding all the desired effects, paint the clay nicely and have time to dry them completely.

Steps for Baking the Polymer Clay Project Correctly After Painting

Many times crafters prefer to bake their non-toxic raw polymer clay project after painting – to help set the paint, make the project more permanent, and give it a nice, glossy finish.

If you must paint before baking, there’s no problem as long as it’s done right. But if you do it wrong, all the paint can get bubbled, cracked, or chipped, causing your entire project to look terrible.

Moreover, some paints release toxic fumes when baked and can interfere with the clay’s cure process.

So, here are a few things you should keep in mind while baking your painted clay project:

1- Use high-quality, oven-safe acrylics

Brands like Golden, Liquitex, or Genesis Heat-Set Paints come packed with fillers and additives that hold up well when heated—making them great for pre-baking paint jobs.

But here’s the catch: don’t get heavy-handed with the brush. Slathering on thick coats is like stuffing your oven with a soggy pizza—trapped moisture and air can throw a fit, leading to bubbling, cracking, or peeling. And if that weren’t enough, thick paint might refuse to cure properly, staying sticky or soft like a bad batch of underbaked cookies.

2- Preheat the oven before putting your clay project inside

To bake the polymer clay piece, preheat your oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit and place the painted clay project on a baking sheet. Remember, this step is extremely important as it helps prevent the paint from bubbling and chipping.

3- Bake for the recommended time

It’s good to bake the polymer clay for about 10 minutes per 1/4 inch thickness. For example, if the piece is 1 inch thick, bake it for about 40 minutes. But if it’s a delicate, thin clay jewelry piece, you may only need to bake it for 5 to 10 minutes.

4- Allow the polymer clay project to cool completely

After baking take the project out of the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Do not touch or move the piece until it has cooled completely – this can cause the paint to chip.

5- Apply a clear coat to the baked polymer clay and let it dry

After the painted project has been baked and cooled, you should apply a clear coat (like an acrylic sealer, varnish, lacquer, or even Mod Podge) to protect the paint and give it a nice shine.

Make sure to choose the right type of clear coat for the paint you have used and let the clear coat dry for 4-6 hours.

Keep in mind that you apply the sealant only after baking the clay. Applying the sealant on the painted clay and then baking it could release toxic fumes into your home, which can be harmful. Also, applying the clear coat sealant on unbaked painted clay can leave the surface looking blotchy when you bake the clay afterward.

Painting Inside an Aquarium – What Paint to Use?

Last week, one of my neighbors gathered a few stunningly beautiful pieces of driftwood and stones to put inside her old aquarium.

But she wanted to color them beautifully before putting them inside the aquarium. She also wanted to paint the backside of the fish tank so that it would create an illusion of an underwater landscape.

She called me and asked about the type of waterproof paint that’s 100% safe to use for fish and can stay there for a long time, and what steps she should follow to make the paint last longer.

She actually had many questions in mind, and I thought to jump in and write a detailed post of what I advised her.

Hopefully, it can help many users who want to know about aquarium-safe paint for decorations. So, let me start with the main question first…

Why You Might Need to Paint Inside an Aquarium?

Painting the inside of an aquarium isn’t just about making it look pretty—it’s about function meeting flair.

A painted interior helps hide cables, filters, and that less-than-glamorous equipment jungle, creating a clean, immersive backdrop that enhances your fish’s colors.

Technically, it also reduces glare and visual stress for aquatic life, promoting a calmer environment. If done right (with aquarium-safe, non-toxic paint), it prevents algae from clinging too easily to glass surfaces.

So yes, it’s part art, part science—a touch of creativity that makes both you and your underwater residents a little happier.

Best Paints for Inside Back of Fish Tank

Painting the back (or interior) of a fish tank can give a clean, finished look — but there are very important differences in what’s safe depending on the material of the tank (glass vs. cement/concrete) and whether you’re painting inside (water-contact) vs. only the back side (outside water).

Below is a breakdown of things to consider + recommended paints + cautions.

1- Paint for glass tanks back

Back panel (outside water) is the easiest, safest scenario. Cleaning the glass well, masking off parts you don’t want painted, using a good adhesive paint or spray paint meant for glass/plastic, then curing thoroughly.

Many aquarists use acrylic craft paint or spray paint on the outside back of indoor glass aquariums.

Water-based acrylic or latex paints (for walls) are generally considered among the safest for painting surfaces that will not be submerged, particularly if they are specifically labeled as aquarium-safe.

The water-based and fast-drying nature of latex and acrylic paints also means they are less likely to release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Moreover, these are free from harmful chemicals that might leach into the water and harm fish, invertebrates, or plants, making them suitable for use in aquatic environments.

However, keep in mind that not all acrylic paints are suitable for aquarium use, as some might contain harmful pigments. So it’s essential to carefully research the brand before buying.

2- Paint for interior submerged glass tank

This is much riskier because the paint is in contact with the water and may leach. Many sources caution against it unless using a genuine aquarium-safe coating.

Moreover, the paint, even when it’s dried, will gradually flake off whatever they are painted on. This also means that even though the paint was initially non-toxic, the flaked pieces of paint that break apart can be hazardous to some fish if they view it as food and consume it.

If you must paint inside a glass tank, choose an epoxy paint or coating rated for submersion, and follow very strict curing procedures.

3- Paints for outdoor cement or concrete fish tanks

If the tank or background is cement, concrete, or masonry (e.g., a basement pool converted to a fish tank, or a pond-style cement aquarium), the requirements are different.

If you have these concrete outdoor aquariums and plan to refinish their cement-based backgrounds, non-toxic two-part epoxy resins that dry clear are best for them.

Fish-safe, non-toxic, and waterproof epoxy coating, such as a pond-safe epoxy or a solvent-free epoxy paint, is also the best option for the inside of a cemented fish tank.

However, if you want to use a paint like acrylic, it must be completely sealed with an aquarium-safe clear epoxy resin.

In general, cement/concrete surfaces are porous, can absorb water, have cracks/voids, and may leach lime/alkali or other compounds.

So, you need a coating/seal that is waterproof, inert, and suitable for underwater exposure. A water-based wall paint or regular Rustoleum enamel paint is not sufficient if it will be submerged or in constant contact with water.

Steps for Using Acrylic Paint for Aquarium Decorations

Acrylic paint is a fast-drying water-based paint made of pigment suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion (a cross-linked network of interconnected polymer chains dispersed in water).

The water evaporates when the acrylic paint dries, and the acrylic polymer chains interlock to form a solid film. That’s the reason acrylic paints are water-soluble but become water-resistant when it dries.

If you decided to use acrylic paint to add color to your aquarium tank and on decorations like reef and driftwood, here are the steps you need to follow:

Step 1. Prepare the work area

Start by covering the floor around your work area with a drop cloth or some old newspapers to make cleanup more effortless if you accidentally spill or drip some paint.

Position your empty aquarium on a protected surface and set aside all decorations for cleaning.

Step 2. Clean the aquarium and decorations

Begin by wiping the back surface of the tank with a soft sponge or cloth to eliminate dust and algae. Steer clear of harsh chemicals to prevent potential harm to the fish.

Rinse the sponge with warm water and proceed to clean the sides and bottom of the tank. Pay close attention to corners and crevices, where grime tends to build up. Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned the tank, rinse it with fresh water to remove any remaining residue.

Next clean decorative aquarium pieces (you intend to paint) with soap and water to remove any dirt, dust, or grease. Pieces like driftwood can have algae and other growths on them that need to be scrubbed off before painting.

So, clean and disinfect them nicely using a bleach solution, vinegar, or soda water. After cleaning, rinse the pieces and allow them to dry completely.

Step 3. Prime the surfaces

If you plan to paint with a light color over a dark one, or on surfaces like plastic or glass, you will need to prime the surface first. This step is necessary to improve the acrylic paint’s adhesion to the surface and prevent peeling.

For priming, you can use an acrylic-based primer or white latex paint. Apply the primer using a brush, mini roller, or spray can, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4. Paint the aquarium and decorations

Now, it’s time to select the aquarium-safe acrylic paints you wish to use – opt for a single color or blend different hues to create unique shades for the rocks and toys you’ll place in the fish tank.

Use a paintbrush or sponge to apply thin layers of fish-safe paint, starting with the larger areas and gradually moving to the smaller details. Avoid applying thicker layers, as they take longer to dry and can flake off faster.

Step 5. Let the paint dry, and apply additional coats

Allow the acrylic paint to dry, which typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes. To speed up this process, you can use a hairdryer, gently blowing warm air over the painted surfaces.

Once the first layer has dried, apply another coat as you did previously. For added durability and to prevent fading or peeling, apply a thin final topcoat of acrylic paint evenly across the surfaces; let the decorations dry and cure for at least 48 hours.

Acrylic paint generally cures within 24 hours, but I recommend waiting 48 hours to ensure the objects are fully ready for submersion in water.

Additional Tips and Ideas

To make your stones or other objects more beautiful, you can sketch or print out images you like on paper, cut them out, and then use them as a stencil to paint over.

Use an airbrush to paint your aquarium decorations and make them beautiful. This technique allows you to achieve intricate details and subtle gradients that can enhance the overall appearance of your objects.

For airbrushing make sure you use a proper thinning medium (Liquitex Professional Airbrush Thinner) for optimal airflow of paint through the airbrush.

While spraying, hold the airbrush at a consistent distance from the surface to avoid pooling or drips.

Where Can You Use the Acrylic Paint Inside the Aquarium?

Acrylic paint can adhere well to clean and primed glass surfaces, commonly used on the aquarium’s back wall for decorative purposes.

But inside the aquarium, you can use this paint on several other surfaces, such as:

PVC pipes or structures used in custom aquarium setups
Ceramic decorations, like hiding caves or plant pots
Artificial rocks, plants, or ornaments made of plastic and wood

Depending on how much the paint is diluted (with water) or how thickly it is applied, the finished product can range from very soft to very hard.

Also, acrylic paints aren’t 100% waterproof. This means that although water-resistant (after they are dried and have stuck to your painting surface), they can still be washed off if exposed to water for a long.

The wet paint will be more likely to bleed and run fast, especially when you use warm water in your aquarium (which you must do in winter).

So, what can be done to make the paint stay on the aquarium decorations for long without getting washed or flaked off? Let’s explore further.

How to Seal and Waterproof the Acrylic Painted Objects Inside Fish Tank?

Applying a waterproofing sealer varnish on the painted fish tank ornaments will maintain their vibrant colors over time and protect the paint from water damage, fading, and peeling.

This type of finish also ensures that no harmful chemicals leach into the water, which could jeopardize the health of your fish and other inhabitants in the aquarium.

You can find many aquarium-safe waterproofing sealers in the market for interior and exterior use, but the most popular brands I have tried are Plasti Dip and Krylon Fusion.

Krylon Fusion All-In-One Spray is safe for fish tank decorations such as rocks, fake plants, and plastic toys (above and below the waterline), but it isn’t as good at holding on to the glass.

So if you want to use a sealer for aquarium background glass (from the inside), you can use Plasti Dip.

The bottom line

Painting inside an aquarium isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about safety and longevity. The key is to choose a paint that’s non-toxic, fully waterproof, and completely cured before water contact.

For glass tanks, it’s far safer to paint the outside back panel using water-based acrylics or enamel sprays like Rust-Oleum—they deliver clean results without risking your fish.

For cement or concrete tanks, only epoxy coatings or aquarium-safe waterproof paints should ever touch the water.

Always give the paint ample curing time—patience here can mean the difference between a thriving tank and a toxic disaster.

When in doubt, remember: if it’s not explicitly rated for underwater use, keep it outside the tank. A perfectly painted aquarium should enhance your setup—not endanger it.

Applying wallpaper is a common choice instead of painting the walls, as it’s quick to apply and will cover the entire room on a budget.

No matter what your choice is regarding the design and material, you will easily find different types of wallpaper according to your choice, including blown vinyl.

Blown vinyl wallpaper is basically a style of wallpaper that comes with an embossed surface design or textured pattern finished with a water-resistant layer of plastic that cannot be easily painted over.

Blown vinyl wallpaper (also called expanded vinyl wallpaper) resembles an embossed or anaglypta paper with a pattern etched into the surface, but it is tinted. The protective layer of plastic makes them resistant to daily wear and weather, making them most suitable for areas like the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry.

Blown Vinyl Wallpaper – Pros and Cons

Blown vinyl wallpapers were trendy in the 1970s but came back in the early 21st century. They were most commonly used in commercial spaces but are also becoming increasingly popular for residential use these days.

Blown vinyl wallpaper comes with several benefits, making it a good choice for many people. Some of these include:

Blown vinyl wallpaper is durable and easy to clean, which is why it is ideally a good choice for high-traffic areas or areas prone to spills and splashes. When installed correctly, they can last for as long as 15 years.
It is also waterproof, making it ideal for kitchen backsplash or bathroom areas.
It is easier to install than other types, such as textured wallpaper. You can even use them on textured walls – it sticks well to them.
Blown vinyl wallpaper also will stick to nonporous surfaces, such as concrete blocks, wood paneling, or synthetic laminate paneling. However, to make sure the paper adheres well, apply lining paper first.
This wallpaper type is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, so you can find one that suits your taste and style.

The waterproofing material of the blown vinyl wallpapers also means that when you need to clean these wallpapers, just use warm water and mild dishwashing detergent.

After wiping, use a clean sponge to rinse and dry the wallpaper with a microfiber cloth to remove any lint.

Aside from all the advantages, blown vinyl wallpaper comes with a few disadvantages that you should be aware of before using it in your home. Some of them include the following:

Blown vinyl wallpaper is more expensive than other types.
It is non-paintable and can shrink when exposed to heat – like in a room with direct sunlight.
It is also not as easy to remove or repair if damaged. So, you may need to hire a professional to do the job for you.

A Few Other Types of Vinyl Wallpapers for Wall Decor

Although blown vinyl wallpapers are easy to install and maintain, their drawbacks make many people look for other types of vinyl wallpapers.

Some of the other most common substitutes include:

1- Vinyl Coated Wallpaper

Vinyl-coated wallpaper is constructed by coating a thin layer of vinyl over paper or other base material (such as polyvinyl chloride). Paper is typically used as the basis for this type of wall covering, although it can also be acrylic vinyl or polyvinyl chloride. This wallpaper’s vinyl coating is washable and sturdy but tears easier than other wallpapers.

2- Solid Sheet Vinyl Wallpaper

Solid vinyl wallpaper is made entirely of vinyl, making it resistant to both water and cleaning. This wallpaper is ideal for high-traffic areas like children’s rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms because of its durability.

Since the vinyl in these wallpapers is in “solid” form and isn’t coated in a liquid form, these are washable, scratch resistant, and more durable than other types of vinyl wallpapers.

3- Paper Backed Vinyl Wallpaper

A wallpaper made of a paper (pulp) backing laminated to a solid sheet of vinyl is referred to as paper-backed vinyl wallpaper. It’s also known as solid sheet vinyl wallpaper since it has a hard surface.

These wallpapers are washable, moisture-resistant, greaseproof, and stain resistant because of which they may be used in almost any room in the house. These wallpapers are also easy to install, repair and remove in full strips.

4- Fabric Backed Vinyl Wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper with a fabric backing is made with vinyl on the top layer and woven fabric instead of paper on the back.

These wallpapers are moisture-resistant, durable, washable, scrubbable, and peelable – making them perfect for high-traffic areas such as hallways, playrooms, kids’ rooms, living room surfaces, kitchens, or bathrooms.

Wallpapers with fabric backing are further classified as follows:

a) Type I – It’s a light-duty wallpaper good for offices, hotel rooms, hospitals, patient rooms, and other low-traffic areas.

b) Type II – It is a medium-duty wallpaper good for higher-traffic or public areas like lounges, corridors, living rooms, foyers, offices, wards, and classrooms.

c) Type III – This high-duty wallpaper is ideal for high-traffic areas with potential abuse, like restaurants, public bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas. These are the places where greater wall protection is often required.

5- Vinyl Wallpaper that Mimics Grasscloth

Besides the above common ones, there is also a vinyl wallpaper that looks like a grasscloth. This wallpaper strip is easy to install, remove, and repair. The seams are barely visible, and you can install them in any room without worrying about washability or durability.

Like other vinyl wall coverings, vinyl grasscloth is machine-produced and lacks the beauty and texture of natural grasscloth wallpaper. But they are usually less expensive and far more durable.

Manufacturers have now discovered methods to create the appearance of a natural grasscloth so the only way to distinguish it from vinyl is by touching the wallpaper.

Vinyl Wallpapering Problems when Installing Wallcoverings

Although easy to install, there can be some problems with vinyl wallpapers. Some of these are due to incorrect installation, while others result from the wallpaper itself.

1- Moisture

Vinyl wallpaper can be significantly damaged if there is excessive moisture present. The humidity in the room should, therefore, be closely monitored.

If the humidity is too high, the wallpaper can absorb moisture from the air and swell causing it to buckle, ripple, blister, or even attract toxic molds.

2- Temperature

Vinyl wallpaper is also sensitive to temperature changes. If the temperature in the room is too low, the wallpaper can become hard and brittle. However, if the temperature is too high the wallpaper can shrink or become soft and gummy causing it to tear easily.

Vinyl wallpaper can also be damaged by exposure to light – if exposed to direct sunlight for too long it can fade or discolor.

3- Bleeding

When you see colors from the design “bleeding” through the vinyl, this is referred to as “color bleeding.”

To avoid this, always test the vinyl wallpaper you’ve chosen in an inconspicuous area before you apply it to the entire wall. Doing this will allow you to determine if the design is “colorfast” (or if the colors will bleed).

4- Stretching

If you try to install vinyl wallpaper without stretching it first, you’ll likely end up with wrinkles or bubbles.

To avoid this, always “book” the vinyl wallpaper by folding it in half lengthwise and letting it sit for about 15 minutes before you begin your project. This will make the vinyl more pliable and much easier to work with.

5- Vinyl Over Vinyl

Many times people just jump into the project and put a new vinyl wallpaper over their old vinyl wallpaper. Unfortunately, trying to cover vinyl wallpaper with new wallpaper is not recommended as it will likely lead to peeling.

For better adhesion and long-lasting, durable results you should make every effort to remove the vinyl wallpaper entirely before applying any new layers.

6- Drying Time

Vinyl wallpapers can take anywhere between 2 and 7 days to dry completely. While this will largely depend on the type of wall covering used and the environmental factors, the condition of the wall surface and the adhesive used will also play a good role.

That said, if you use a peel-and-stick type vinyl wallpaper with self-adhesive, you need not worry about the adhesive you will be using.

7- Choosing the Right Adhesive

Many times, you will have to purchase the adhesive separately to install vinyl wallpaper that doesn’t come with backed adhesive.

If you don’t use the right adhesive, you’ll likely end up with a host of problems such as wallpaper curling away, peeling away from the wall, or not sticking at all.

What glue to use for vinyl wallpaper generally depends on the wallpaper’s weight and thickness. For example, if you’re working with a heavier grasscloth vinyl wallpaper, you’ll need an adhesive that’s specifically designed for heavyweight wallpapers. On the other hand, if you’re working with thinner, lighter vinyl wallpaper, you can get away with using a standard wallpaper adhesive.

Installing vinyl wallpaper on damp walls can also cause problems. The wallpaper will not adhere properly to the wall, and as the wall dries, the wallpaper will start to peel off. If you must install wallpaper on damp walls, make sure to use an adhesive designed for that purpose.

Best Wallpaper Paste for Vinyl Wallpaper and Applying It Correctly

Roman’s Heavy-Duty Paste and Rust-Oleum SureGrip Strippable Wallpaper Adhesive are the best adhesives on the market that can hold up even the heaviest wall covering.

If you are looking for good quality and affordable wallpaper adhesive, I recommend trying Rust-Oleum’s paper adhesive, which is the most durable option.

Some adhesive pastes require that you “size” the wall before you start hanging the wallpaper. Sizing is a pre-coat that you apply to the wall surface before hanging the wallpaper. This step is vital because it helps the adhesive better grip the wall, ultimately leading to a better overall hold.

Many adhesives don’t require that you size the wall before you start hanging the wallpaper. With these types of adhesives, you simply apply the adhesive directly to the back of the wallpaper.

Once you’ve applied the paste, wait the amount of time specified by the manufacturer before you start hanging the wallpaper according to the provided instructions.
