5 Clever Tricks to Remove Paint From a Bathtub

If your old porcelain bathtub has started looking dingy, it’s time to plan a makeover.

So, let’s look at different ways and cleaner products you can use for stripping paint from various bathtub materials…

1- Removing Paint from a Porcelain Tub

While porcelain cracks and chips more easily than other materials, it is significantly more durable and scratch-resistant.

This also means most household cleaners and solvents will not damage porcelain tubs if you use them cautiously for cleaning.

If the flaking paint is loose and easily removable, you do not need to use paint-stripping solvents. Instead, you can use a scraper or razor blade to remove flaking paint on a porcelain tub just by scraping.

However, if the old dull paint is not loose and is tightly adhered to the surface, you will need to use a solvent.

Apply a commercial paint stripper, rubbing alcohol, or acetone on the bathtub area and leave it there for about ten minutes.
As you see the paint bubbling and loosening from the porcelain tub’s surface, use a scraper to peel away the loosened paint.
If the paint isn’t loosening or there is still some paint left to remove, apply another layer of solvent or paint stripper and repeat the process.
When the paint is no longer visible, wash the tub with warm soapy water and rinse to clear away any leftover paint remover.
Allow the tub to dry completely, and paint over the porcelain material if you need to give it a fresh color.

Caution: It’s recommended to use appropriate protective gear like a respirator mask, rubber gloves, and safety glasses whenever you’re handling chemicals or solvents.

2- Stripping Paint from an Acrylic Tub

Unlike porcelain, many cleaning chemicals and paint removers can dissolve acrylic material if not used correctly.

So, I recommend not using any abrasive cleaners, solvents, or scrapers on your old dirty and scratched acrylic bathtub.

Instead, you can wipe the paint with a paper towel or prepare a homemade vinegar-based bathtub cleaner for cleaning the tub before painting.

Here’s how to make a homemade cleaner/scrubber for your acrylic tub…

Fill your bathtub with hot water in such a way that it covers the paint stains fully.
Add three to four ounces of laundry soap and allow it to sit overnight, so the detergent loosens the paint.
In the morning, scrub the paint stains on the acrylic tub with a soft sponge.
Now spread baking soda over the stain and let it soak for ten minutes.
Next, squirt vinegar onto the area to form the foaming between the two ingredients, which will help lift away the paint.
To treat the tough stains that have remained, use a sponge soaked in vinegar and scrub while the reaction occurs.
Once you notice all the old paint finish removed, rinse the tub with clean, fresh water and allow it to dry for a few hours.

TIP: During the entire process, keep the affected acrylic tub area wet with hot water, and do not let the paint dry.

The only downside to these models is their enormous weight, which can be overwhelming for a bathroom to bear. Therefore, making it not the ideal option in many households.

To me, it’s well worth owning a piece if you have a vintage iron tub in your bathroom with a timeless look as long as you can take good care of it.

After all the years of good use, the paint might flake and chip, making your bathtub look ugly. The good news is that you can refinish it to make it look new after cleaning and removing the old protective layer of paint coating, enamel, or porcelain that protects the surface against rust.

To remove any dirt or grime built up, start by cleaning the tub with dish soap and a mildly abrasive sponge.
Then, use sandpaper or steel wool to get rid of paint and rust stains from cast iron tubs.
If you hand-sand the paint off cast iron, use circular motions and frequently clean debris off the surface with a damp cloth.
Alternatively, utilize an electric sander which will erase old paint quickly. This can be helpful if you have a significantly large bathtub or other cast iron accessories like faucets in your bathroom to refinish.

TIP: After removing the old paint layers, you must apply a new coat of spray paint, lacquer, or refinishing oil immediately.

Please do not leave the cast iron bathtub without a protective layer for an extended period, as it will start to rust.

4- Getting Rid of Paint from a Tub Made of Metal

Metal bathtubs – such as those made from copper or stainless steel – can add an element of luxury to any bathroom.

However, it’s important to note that these shiny clawfoot tubs are susceptible to scratching and other damage if you use abrasive cleaning products like steel wool and sandpaper.

While most people do not consider painting over them, if you already have old paint or want to redo the old piece, I recommend using olive oil for paint removal on your luxurious stainless steel or copper bathtub.

Apply a generous amount of olive oil evenly on your steel bathtub surface with paper towels or rags and let it sit for about half an hour to loosen the paint.
Remove as much paint as possible from the lubricated surface using a plastic paint scraper wrapped in a thin rag.
Wrapping the rag on the scraper is important to avoid scratching the underlying metal surface of the tub.
Wet another clean rag with mineral spirits and rub the leftover stains for one minute, then wipe away the loosened paint that has remained using a clean rag.

5- Removing Epoxy Paint from a Fiberglass Bathtub

Fiberglass tubs are typically coated with epoxy paint, and removing these paints from the surface is relatively easy.

The first step is always to clean the bathtub with dish soap and a mildly abrasive sponge to remove any dirt or grime build-up over time.

After that, you must use a mild paint removal paste (vinegar with baking soda) to remove the epoxy paint.

Mix baking soda and vinegar to form a thick paste.
Spread this paste over the area, and let it sit for about thirty minutes.
Using a non-abrasive sponge, scrub the bubbling paint, repeat if necessary
When the paint is gone, wash the area with warm soapy water and rinse to remove any leftover paste or paint residue.
You can now paint the tub or apply a new epoxy coating if you want to change the look of your bathtub.

TIP: Solvents like acetone and paint thinners will tend to remove epoxy paint faster but will also damage the fiberglass tub. So, it’s better to avoid them.

The bottom line

You may have noticed that over time, objects made of copper, brass, bronze, and various other related metals start to turn a different color.

This is most of the time caused by patina, which is a type of tarnish that forms on the surface of such materials.

In simple terms, patina is an aesthetically pleasing transformation that happens to bare metal when exposed to the elements. Much like how a freshly cut apple begins to turn reddish brown, oxidation occurs and produces an aging effect on the metal surface – it’s all chemistry.

Due to the chemical process that happens naturally, patina usually brings out rich colors in antiques, such as copper pots, creating an even more enchanting aesthetic experience.

But What’s the Purpose of a Patina?

And why are we discussing it here in the first place?

Well, the patina finish is not only visually pleasing; it also offers functional protection against corrosion.

The resulting surface coating is so beautiful that it has increased in popularity over the years and has become a trend in interior design. It can be found in hand tools, furniture, jewelry, and various other decorative items.

While the process was all-natural when Italians first used the term “patina” in the 17th century to refer to the green film that’s produced on the surface of copper, it is today used as an antiquing technique to create unique looks and add character to an object.

But remember, it is nearly impossible for imposters to replicate the exact beauty of the patina finish. Trying to produce one artificially is extremely challenging and usually leads to an inconsistent finish, which can be indicative of it being faked.

Is Patina the Same as Rust Formation?

Patina is formed when the metal is subjected to the environment, particularly weathering. In addition, patina can form through polishing, wear, and even age. The most apparent effect is that bronze, copper, or similar metal has altered in its coloring.

However, while patina is created through the process of oxidation and reduction, the result is not damaging to the metal itself. This means unlike rust, which damages the metal, patina is simply a tarnish that coats and protects the surface of the metal.

But because the patina coating is also created by oxidation, it is sometimes called “patina rust,” which protects the surface underneath without causing any harm to the metal itself.

The most common type of patina is found on coins that are made from copper, bronze, and similar materials. Archeologists have found patina-coated coins that date back many centuries.

It is believed that once a metal is covered in patina, it’s protected from the elements, such as being buried in the ground, and it can last for much longer.

Even a thin protective layer of faux patina, when put on metals like a carbon steel blade on a knife, can help prevent future oxidation (or rusting), providing a much longer life for the metal.

Verdigris vs. Patina – What’s the Difference?

While patina can form on the surface of metals (such as copper, bronze, or brass) along with certain types of stones and wooden furniture due to exposure to the elements, verdigris is a distinctive green pigment created when acetic acid reacts to copper.

You may have noticed green pigments on the Statue of Liberty, copper roofs, or structures that are near seawater. It’s because of the thin protective coating formed on the copper that gives it its distinctive emerald color. This type of patina is referred to as verdigris and can take many years to form.

What’s the Difference Between Tarnish and Patina?

Perhaps the most obvious difference between tarnish and patina is that patina is generally desired while tarnish is not. Tarnish tends to dull the appearance of an object, while patina is seen as an enhancement.

Patina creates either green or brown oxidation coatings, usually only seen in bronze and similar alloys after long periods outside. Tarnish, on the other hand, is more of a general term that can happen more quickly.

Tarnish is simply a type of corrosion that occurs on many metals due to the combination of oxidation and sulfur dioxide. When both elements form on the metal, the result is a slight deterioration to the surface, but the most obvious result is the change in color.

Another method by which tarnish is formed is through abrasion. Metal surfaces that are rubbed with some frequency against another surface may form a tarnish in that area.

Can Patina Formation on Metal be Removed or Stopped?

An antique patina finish is becoming one of the most desirable textures in this modern era. If you want to get an aged, distinctive look on your copper sinks, bathtubs, or pots, a patina is a way to go. The beautiful thing about patina is that it can be easily reversed if necessary.

This means you can remove patinas, if needed, by using commercial metal rust removers or some household items like vinegar, baking soda, and salt. Light rust, tarnish, and patina can also be removed with scrubbing using steel wool or other rough-textured cleaning tools.

To preserve the luxurious appearance and finish of copper pipes, sinks, taps, door handles, etc., many manufacturers also use a variety of exotic paint finishes and lacquer coatings that helps to stop the chemical reaction and hence the formation of unwanted green patina finish.

The Bottom Line

Based on the above, we can say there is no substantial difference between tarnish and patina because patina is also a form of tarnish. Both are also different from rust, even though they are created in a similar fashion.

Tarnish and patina form through the process of oxidation, which happens due to exposure to oxygen in the air, even in dry conditions. Rust takes that a step further because the presence of moisture is required. It is why metal objects in the desert tend to take far longer to form rust because of the lack of moisture.

Removing Roofing Tar From Metal [Step-By-Step]

Roofing tar is excellent at waterproofing and fixing holes in your metal roof. But too much of it or using it improperly will result in ugly stains – its to messy and sticky.

In some cases, the tar mess that’s created might be pretty hard to remove without taking off chunks of your roof.

But wait, before you accept the fact that these are permanent stains and you need to get a new roof installed, you should try a few things first.

This guide will show you how to remove roofing tar from metal surfaces without damaging the roof itself. So, do not panic; follow the tips and steps below.

Roofing Tar Removal – What to Use?

Roofing tar is a black, oily, and sticky substance that’s used on flat roofs to patch leaks. It’s composed of coal tar and petroleum derivatives. The majority of them are dark blackish in color, although some producers have introduced lighter hues such as silver and white.

While roofing tar isn’t very easy to get off, it can be removed from most surfaces (like roofs, metal tools, and hands) using WD-40 or an Oven Cleaner if you are ready to put in a little elbow grease.

Homemade tar removers such as kerosene and diesel fuel can also work on roofing tar spills, but they are less effective and can be messy and time-consuming if you don’t have the right tools available.

It’s also not a good idea, to apply these flammable and hazardous substances inside your house or on roofing tiles constructed of asphalt and concrete as they can stain these materials.

How to Remove Roofing Tar with WD-40?

As I said, using WD-40 is the easiest and fastest way to strip off toxic roofing tar from metal surfaces. Here are the general instructions and guidelines you need to follow.

What you will need:

A ladder
Safety goggles
Rubber gloves
A putty knife or scraper
WD-40 or oven cleaner
Rags, soap, and water
A power washer (optional)

Step-by-step instructions:

Step 1:

Put on your safety goggles and rubber gloves to protect your eyes and hands from the chemicals.

Step 2:

Climb up the ladder and assess the situation. If the spilled tar has stained a small area on your metal roof and is still fresh, you can probably remove it with a putty knife or scraper.

If the tar is in a larger area or has been there for a while, you might need to use WD-40 or an oven cleaner.

Step 3:

Apply WD-40 to the area with a rag, or if you are using a sprayer, spray generously over the area that you need to treat.

Let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the tar and then scrape it off with a putty knife or scraper.

Step 4:

If the dried tar is still stubborn, use a heat gun to melt it. Ensure you do not heat the tar too much, as it can damage or warp the material you are trying to clean.

Removing Roofing Tar from Metal with Ammonia

By following the DIY steps above, you should be able to remove maximum roofing tar and stains. But if that doesn’t seem to work, another best way is by using ammonia and baking soda.

Here’s how to use them…

Mix together ammonia and baking soda in equal parts and apply them to the area with tar stains.
Let it sit for 30 minutes, and then use a wire brush to remove it by applying enough pressure on the surface.
Do not apply too much pressure as it can damage the underneath surface.
Finally, rinse off the residue with water and dry the surface with a cloth.

Tips and Warnings

Usually, to meet roofing standards, coal tar must be refined and processed before it’s used in roofing tar intended to seal, join, or repair roofs that have suffered damage or are deteriorating slowly. These can either be applied by trowel or can be applied like paint or caulking tubes. Although the newer formulations are asbestos free, they may contain solvents, adherents, mineral fillers, and fibers that are considered carcinogenic.

Bitumen, tar paper, gravel, and asphalt-based adhesives are also available as tar materials. Some of them are made of petroleum distillates that are used to adhere various types of roofing material, such as shingles, to the underlying structure.

So, one important thing to keep in mind during the application, as well as the removal process, is that the tar is a very toxic substance, and the odor it creates can be harmful to your health if inhaled for a long – it’s, therefore, important to take all the necessary safety precautions.

Plus, it can be sensitive to temperature. This also means when the temperature rises to extremely high levels, roofing tar will transform into a liquid. So, it should not be used on steep roofs to avoid running off at extremely high temperatures. It’s however perfect for flat and low slope roofs, allowing it to self-heal and seal leaks.

How to Get a Permanent Marker off Your Desk?

You are in your home office, working on an important project and you accidentally knock over a permanent marker only to see that the ink immediately starts to bleed, ruining your desk and the work surface.

If this has happened to you, stay calm and don’t panic in such a situation.

I have been in a similar condition a couple of times when I worked with my Sharpie. In my opinion, the quickest way to remove the permanent marker from a wooden desk is to:

Apply a little bit of isopropyl alcohol to a clean cotton ball.
Dab the permanent marker region with the wetted cotton ball until the permanent marker, like Sharpie, begins to lift.
To remove the remained marker spots, reapply isopropyl alcohol with a fresh cotton ball.
And then use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe down the area to clear away any residual cleaner.

Further, in this guide, I will share a host of other methods (in case the above one does not work), along with all that I have learned from my mistakes, and what worked for me.

Hopefully, the tips and techniques I will discuss will help you out in the future if you find yourself stuck in a similar situation.

Permanent Marker Stains On Wood

Before we proceed with permanent marker cleaning methods, it’s important to know that the ink in permanent markers can either be alcohol-based or oil-based, which is generally determined by the type of solvent used in it.

Also, these inks are designed to be resistant to water, so trying to remove them with water will only make the stain worse. Instead, you need to use a solvent that will dissolve the ink.

For alcohol-based markers on finished or varnished wood, you can use rubbing alcohol, whereas, for oil-based markers, it’s good to use something like WD-40.

Apply the solvent to a cotton ball or paper towel and dab it on the stain. Once you’ve applied the solvent, you should see the ink transfer from the wood to the cotton ball or paper towel.

Continue dabbing until the stain is gone permanently. Once the surface has been cleaned, wipe it with a damp cloth.

Removing the Sharpie from Wooden Surfaces

Besides rubbing alcohol and WD-40, there are many other ways you can try to take the Sharpie permanent marker stains out from wood surfaces. Some of them would use items that are probably already in your home, while others may require a trip to the store.

The methods I will discuss here will mostly be using the materials you already have in your pantry, making it very easy for you to get the job done even if your kid has doodled all over your work desk, hardwood floor, tables, chairs, or varnished doors with a sharpie.

But still, I would recommend testing the products in an inconspicuous area first to see the reaction of your wood to the cleaning agent. This would be particularly helpful if you have an expensive piece of finished wood furniture you don’t want to get ruined.

So, without any delay, here is a list of ways to clean permanent marker stains on wood…

Method 1- Vinegar

Don’t panic if you’ve found a stubborn permanent marker stain on your counters and cabinets in the kitchen, bathroom, or kid’s room- there’s an easy solution.

One promising approach is a vinegar-based stain removal method –

Simply soak a clean cloth in it
Rub over the affected area until all traces vanish
Then use a fresh dry cloth for the final wiping up

Vinegar is the go-to for removing ink stains from wood, but baby oil, spray-on sunscreen, lotion sunblock, and hairspray are all unexpected yet useful alternatives.

If vinegar doesn’t do the trick, these can also be used in a similar fashion and just might work better.

Method 2- Peanut Butter

Another excellent way to remove a permanent marker is by using peanut butter, mayonnaise, or vegetable oil. You would most likely have them in your kitchen or on the dining table.

Scoop some of the peanut butter out and start rubbing it on top of the marker stain using a spoon or butter knife.
You will see the color from the permanent marker slowly coming off your desk as you continue to rub the peanut butter in.
After allowing it to sit for a minute or two, use a paper towel to wipe off the excess peanut butter, and the stain should be gone as well.
Give the area a final wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue from the peanut butter before allowing it to air dry.
If the stain is still visible, you can repeat the process or try one of the other methods listed below.

Method 3- Ronsonol Lighter Fuel

Ronsonol Lighter fuel is a fluid that’s used to refill lighters but can also be effective in removing markers and other stains from wood floors or other surfaces.

Pour a small amount of the fluid onto a clean ball of cotton wool to saturate it.
Gently start rubbing the ball of cotton wool over the stained area in circular motions.
You should see the permanent marker coming off the surface and onto the ball of cotton wool.
Change to a new clean area of the cotton wool when it becomes too stained to continue.
When you have removed as much of the marker as possible, use a clean damp cloth to wipe over the area to remove any residue from the Ronsonol.

Method 4- Pencil Eraser

While a standard pencil eraser (in your kid’s pencil box) may work on various surfaces like walls, plastic, metal, or glass, I think this should not work on porous surfaces like wood unless you have a more robust eraser meant to clean such surfaces.

But it’s worth trying if you do not have access to any of the other methods mentioned above. Maybe if the Sharpie marker stains have yet not been set on the wood, it can work.

Grab a pencil eraser and start by rubbing the eraser over the top of the stain in a circular motion.
If you don’t see any results after a minute or so, try wetting the eraser slightly with some water and then continue rubbing.
You should start seeing the stain coming off the surface and transferring onto the eraser very soon.
When you’ve gotten as much of the stain out as possible, clean the eraser and the surface with a wet cloth to remove any remaining stains. Allow them to air dry naturally.

Method 5- Baking Soda

I once used this method to remove the permanent marker stains on the wood paneling. And it worked.

To use this method, make a baking soda paste with water by adding 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda to a bowl half filled with water. Stir nicely to form a paste with a fine-sand-like texture.

Apply the baking soda paste to the marker stains on the wood paneling.
Allow it to sit for a couple of minutes – do not let it dry.
Using a dampened, lint-free cotton cloth, gently rub the paste on the stained area.
Finally, wipe it with another clean damp cloth.

TIP: If it’s a laminated wood, you could also make a solution of baking soda in water and apply it with an old toothbrush.

Method 6- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

This method requires some commercially available products but is more heavy-duty than other methods listed above. You can use it if all the above fails or if you have a large area that’s stained with a permanent blue marker or black printer ink.

For this method, you will need Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and an Amodex Ink Stains Remover.

Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to apply a little amount of ink stain remover to the marker spot you’re dealing with.
Rub the marker stain gently in a circular motion using the magic eraser. The ink will come off as you rub, leaving behind only traces.
Finally, use a wet cloth to clean the residues away from the unfinished or finished wood.

Method 7- Nail Polish Remover

Using Nail polish remover (acetone) to get Sharpie off the finished wooden furniture is something I haven’t tried on. Because my desk was already ruined heavily I don’t want to take the risk of trying harsh chemicals that can probably ruin the surface further.

I should also say that if you already have the paint or the varnish on your expensive furniture, it’s better to avoid this technique as it can take the finish off while removing the marker stains.

But if you want to take the risk trying this method or if your inexpensive wood surface is still bare, here’s what you need to do:

Pour some nail polish remover into a bowl and soak a clean white cloth in it.
Rub the cloth over the stained area in a circular motion until the Sharpie comes off.
Wipe it with a clean damp cloth to remove the residue and let it air dry.

What if All the Methods Fail to Clear the Marker Stains?

Although there is no such permanent marker that can withstand all the products I have mentioned above, still sometimes you may find the stains unresponsive to any of the given treatments.

This especially happens when the permanent marker has been given a long time to set on the wood.

In such cases, sanding down may be the only way to go. You can lightly sand away the stained layer and then refinish the wood with either a wood stain or paint.

This is a sure-shot method, but it’s also a little time-consuming. So, you must only go for it when nothing else works.

Also, make sure that you don’t sand too hard on your old wood, or else you may end up damaging the wood.

If you want to avoid sanding altogether, then you can also try painting over the stained area with a dark color (like navy blue or black). This way, you will be able to cover up the marker stains completely.

There was once a time when the practice of gluing flooring to a subfloor was common. It is less typical of an approach today due to the unattached, or floating, style of floors now available.

Though adhesive-only flooring can still be used and has some draws to it, some disadvantages keep it from seeing a popular resurgence.

For homeowners renovating their floors, it may be a surprise to lift the flooring and see black adhesive beneath the tiles or linoleum. This is known as black mastic; more often than not, it contains asbestos.

Wondering what it is, what it looks like, if is it dangerous, and much more. Let’s address all these questions…

What is Black Mastic Asbestos?

Black mastic was a material commonly used as an adhesive for linoleum, ceramic tile, and other such materials for floors in the 20th century.

It’s a general term for glue-like adhesive for flooring, and many modern mastics tend to be water-based or latex based, so they can be softened using water.

However, the old kind of mastic is made using asphalt-based cement. And the biggest issue with this old black mastic is that it commonly contains asbestos, though some do not.

Asbestos has been shown to cause life-threatening health problems in the form of mesothelioma. If you plan to do anything with the old black mastic, you should ensure you are not using the dangerous kind.

Many kinds of cutback adhesives have asbestos in them, and it is believed that this material was added to make the compound resistant to fire. Though this would give a slightly effective resistance, asbestos simply made the product long-lasting and more durable. This is due to the higher fiber count of asbestos, which locks up to make the mastic stronger.

The Appearance of Black Asbestos Mastic

The only time you will most likely see black mastic asbestos is once a floor covering has been lifted off.

Black is the main color, as its name indicates, but there may be other colors you may notice in the mastic, too. Like colors from the floor covering that aren’t totally removed or any traces of the subflooring peeking through.

Keep in mind that some water-based latex adhesives were also black and dark gray, so you should not use color only to identify black mastic.

In many cases, you will see that true black mastic sits flush against the subfloor and has no gaps, bumps, or ridges of any significant size. It will usually feature comb-like marks embedded into it from when it was initially applied.

Potential asbestos in the black mastic will not be able to be seen with the naked eye. Though cutback adhesive isn’t affected by most cleaners and water, if you sand it vigorously, it would become tar-like and thick from the heat produced. However, this is not recommended because of the potential asbestos risk.

Can You Seal or Paint Over Black Mastic?

While not a very safe option, property owners have numerous methods to seal black mastic and then cover it with paint, epoxy, or their preferred flooring material.

The top three non-toxic options are Ardex cement overlay material, Fiberlock coating-like sealer, and a combination of sealer/primer products. Most of the time these aren’t recommended to be dealt with without professional help.

If you want to reveal that old shiny chrome on your used set of chrome wheels without removing them from your car, it can take a bit more time, but it’s doable.

Some of the basic steps involved are:

Wear gloves and other safety gear.
Clean the surface of your rims to remove dirt and debris using a pressure washer and a cleaner like simple green, clay bar, or mild dish soap.
Apply some rubbing alcohol or oven cleaner to the old paint on the rims and let it sit for a few minutes.
Scrub off the paint on the rims using a scrubber – be careful you do not rub too hard, as it can damage the chrome underneath.
Once the old paint on all the rims is removed, rinse them with clean water.
Finally, dry the rims and polish your newly revealed chrome with a premium chrome polish.

How to Clean Up Spilled Essential Oil Stains from Wood Table?

I have used essential oils many times to scent my home and have experienced that the bottles in which they come are tricky to open.

Yes, they can be very problematic, which is why I have spilled essential oils on my wooden table and floors a few times.

While it will not be easy to eliminate the discoloration and odor caused by essential oils entirely, you can still clean it up by following some simple steps and techniques.

One of the best ways to remove tough essential oil stains on wood is by using baking soda, a dry cleaning solvent, and Fuller’s Earth. The process will need some elbow and grease, but it will work like a charm in cleaning your wood table and looking as good as new.

Below in this article, I will give you more details on how to use this method, along with a few other alternative methods that are relatively easier but not as great.

Also, I will discuss which essential oils tend to leave the worst stain and how you can avoid critical oil stains in the first place. So, without any further ado, let’s get started…

Which Essential Oils Leave The Worst Stain?

When getting started, you first need to identify the type of essential oil that has spilled on your wood table or hardwood floors. This is an important step, as some essential oils are more likely to cause staining than others.

For instance, darker and thicker essential oils such as cinnamon, clove, patchouli, and vetiver are more likely to cause permanent staining than lighter oils such as lemon, bergamot, and lavender.

Sandalwood, tea tree, and peppermint are other oils that leave a stubborn stain. However, it doesn’t mean these oils will always cause permanent staining; some can be removed with the right cleaning solution and method – it is best to clean them up immediately.

Removing Spilled Essential Oil on Wood – Step By Step

Once you have identified the oil, the next step is to take preventive measures to avoid spreading essential oil and causing more damage.

This should be done by blotting the area with a clean cloth or white paper towels, which will help to absorb the maximum amount of oil from the surface. Once you have done that, it’s time to move on to cleaning.

Method 1 – Dishwashing Liquid

The most effective way to remove the stains caused due to fresh spills of essential oils from your wood table is by using a dishwashing liquid.

For this, you will need the following:

A bowl of warm water
One teaspoon of dishwashing liquid
A clean and soft cloth

Instructions:

For this, you will need the following:

1 part of white vinegar
parts of warm water
A clean and soft cloth
Stain-removing laundry detergent

Instructions:

Step 1. Mix 1 part of white vinegar with two parts of warm water in a bowl.

Step 2. Soak a clean and soft cloth in the mixture and then use it to wipe off the essential oil spilled from your wooden table.

Step 3. Once the spill has been removed, apply some stain-removing laundry detergent directly to the affected area.

Step 4. Rub it in using a clean and soft cloth.

Step 5. Rinse the area with warm water and then dry it thoroughly using a clean towel.

Repeat the process as necessary till the stain is completely removed.

Method 3 – Baking Soda + Dry Cleaning Solvent and Fuller’s Earth

If the scented oil stain on the furniture or floor has seeped in, dried, and already caused discoloration, the above methods might not work well.

You will instead need to make a baking soda and Fuller’s Earth to remove the essential oil spill.

Remember that rough, unfinished wood will tend to absorb more oil than smooth painted surfaces. And the discoloration is generally because the essential oils are absorbed deeply into the wood grains. So you will work accordingly to draw the oil out of the surface without damaging the finish.

For this, you will need the following:

1/4 cup of baking soda
1/4 cup dry cleaning solvent
Three tablespoons Fuller’s Earth
A clean and a soft cloth

Instructions:

Step 1. Sprinkle the baking soda on the wood surface stained with scented oil.

Step 2. Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes so that it absorbs the oil from the wood.

Step 3. With a soft brush, remove the baking soda from the furniture surface and put it in the trash.

Step 4. Mix dry cleaning solvent and tablespoons of Fuller’s Earth in a small cup or a bowl. Stir them to make a paste.

Step 5. Apply this generously onto the affected area using a soft cloth.

Step 6. Leave it on for 15-25 minutes so the paste can sink in and do its job. As the paste dries, it will draw the remaining stain and odor out of your wood surface.

Step 7. Wipe away the dried paste with a clean damp cloth or a scrub brush.

Step 8. If the stain is still visible, you can repeat the steps one more time until it is completely gone.

Step 9. Finally, use a dry and soft cloth to wipe away any residue and let the area air dry completely.

Step 10. If required, buff the furniture with an appropriate wood cleaner or a polish to restore the shine.

A word of caution: Getting the EO stains entirely out of rough, untreated, or unfinished wood is almost impossible. So, if you are unsure about the method or the results and want to safeguard your expensive investment, it is best to call a professional for help.

Also, it’s good to check the preventive measures and ways by which you can prevent oil spills in the future.

How Can You Avoid Essential Oil Stains on Wood in the First Place?

The best way to avoid concentrated essential oil stains on your clothes and nearby wood surfaces is by being careful while handling them.

Tip 1- Always use a dropper (or pipette) when transferring oils from the bottle to another container, especially when using an EO for your diffuser.

Tip 2- If using a spray bottle to mist your diffuser, be extra careful while holding it near your bed, couch, or sofa.

Tip 3- Essential oil spills, mishaps, or messes can also be avoided by using a tray or a coaster while diffusing them. If there is any spillage, it will be contained, and you can wipe it off the tray or coaster instead of dealing with an enormous mess on your wooden table or floor.

Tip 4- When storing the essential oils, keep them in a safe place, away from the reach of children or pets. The best is to keep them in a cool and dark place (in a cupboard with the lid on your essential oil bottle) to help preserve their therapeutic properties.

Tip 5- Even after all the measures and precautions, if you happen to get spills on your clothes and wood surfaces, immediately remove the piece of clothing and wash it with cold water.

And clean the wood as soon as possible using one of the above treatment processes. The sooner you treat the spill, the better your chance of thoroughly removing the concentrated essential oil.

These pipes come in various sizes and shapes, and most, if not all of them, have some type of printing on them, which indicates manufacturer information, the type of the pipe, its dimensions, etc.

The writing on PVC can be just as stubborn and hard-wearing as the PVC itself, which can pose a problem when you want to use the pipes for decorative or aesthetic reasons.

Fortunately, PVC cleaner explicitly made to clean these pipes can help. These come in a liquid form and are made to be applied to the exterior surfaces of a pipe to remove ink markings, printing, and bar codes.

PVC cleaners are used as the first step in cleaning a pipe to remove any oil, stains, and dirt from the surface of the pipe before any primer is applied to it for the installation of a coupling joint in industrial settings. You can use them not just on PVC but also on ABS hard plastic and CPVC.

Types of PVC Cleaners

Purchasing PVC pipe cleaner is often tricky, as there are two different types intended for use with the material. Using Spray-on PVC Cleaners

Many PVC cleaners are available in a spray-on form to make them easy to apply. If you plan to use them, simply spray the cleaner on the pipe markings and give it time to soak into the PVC. Then, wipe the product off using a paper towel or a rag.

To guarantee excellent results, make certain to adhere to the directions on your PVC cleaner carefully. And don’t forget to wear gloves while handling these substances; they are known to cause staining and can easily stick to the skin when exposed.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Using PVC Cleaner

Before you decide to paint ceramic tiles, it’s essential to start with clean grout to ensure a smooth, lasting finish. Here’s what products to use and how to do it effectively:

1- Vinegar, Ammonia and Baking soda

In addition, you will need warm water, a bucket, a grout brush, a sponge, a wet vacuum, and dry towels.

As part of this process, it helps to know what is causing the grout to be discolored—the reasons why will help you choose the right cleaning product.

For example, to clean moderately dirty tile grout, professionals recommend mixing equal parts white vinegar and water, as they can effectively whiten old grout.

However, for heavily stained grout, ammonia and baking soda are more powerful alternatives. But it is vital to use them cautiously in a well-ventilated area.

To clean filthy tile grout, below is a step-by-step guide you may follow that uses a combination of all three products.

1- Clean the surface

Floor and tile cleaning can be done by sweeping away the loose dirt or using a vacuum.

Once the floor is clean, mop the entire surface with warm water and mild dish soap to help loosen the dirt in the grout.

If you notice any cracks in tiles, make sure to repair them as well.

2- Mix & apply the cleaning solution

Mix ¼ cup ammonia, 1/3 cup vinegar, and ½ cup baking soda into 7 cups water.

Stir the solution until it is ready for use, then pour it into a spray bottle.

3- Start with a small area of grout that is dirty

Spray the prepared solution on the grout. Let it sit for about five minutes, then wipe the solution away with a sponge or clean cloth.

If that does not work, spray the solution again and then work it into using a grout brush. This should allow you to scrub out the stains that are present.

Finally, use a wet vacuum cleaner to extract the remaining dirt, residues, mold, or mildew that the cleaning solution has removed.

2- Oxygen Bleach

If the above cleaning solution mixture of ammonia, vinegar, and baking soda does not work well to clean your floor grout, you can always apply oxygen bleach, such as OxiClean.

It’s recommended that you mix the bleach with water, although if the stains are adamant, you can try straight bleach instead.

Prep the surface as you would with the standard cleaning solution, and apply the bleach.
Let the bleach soak in, then scrub with a grout brush.
Once completed, rinse and lift the solution out using a wet vac.

During the entire process, be sure to wear gloves along with eye protection. Also, ensure the windows are open to allow fresh air into the room.

3- Lemon Juice

Lemon juice acts as a natural mild acid that helps break down light stains and soap residue on grout lines.

Simply apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 5–10 minutes, and scrub with a stiff brush or an old toothbrush. The acidity helps dissolve grime without damaging the surrounding ceramic tiles.
