Menards is the third-largest home improvement retailer in the country after Home Depot and Lowe’s. If you’re searching for high-quality items to decorate your home, it’s the place to go for.
Not only does the company deal in building materials, home appliances, and other hardware, but it also has a wide array of paints to choose from at an affordable price range.
When it comes to returning interior and exterior paints for any reason, Menards offers one of the most generous return policies. This means if you’re unhappy with a can of paint purchased from them, it can be returned within 30 to 90 days of the purchase date, no questions asked.
How to Return Paint at Menards?
If the paint is new and unused, the store will be able to offer a refund or exchange for your product – whatever suits you. Just bring the original receipt and speak with the customer service desk to get the process started.
The refund is usually made in the form of your original payment, which can be either a credit card, debit card, or cash. So, if you have used a card payment, ensure to carry the same card for the refund as well.
You can also process the return by mail, but it will take about two weeks for the return to be processed. And Menards might also deduct the cost of return shipping from your refund if you choose to do so.
Exceptions to Menards Paint Return Policy
Although Menards has a straightforward paint returning or exchanging policy for new, unused paints, there are situations in which they may not accept the return.
Some of these circumstances are as follows:
- Special order or custom-mixed paints
- Paints and supplies that are more than 30 days old
- Paints that have been used, opened, or found damaged
For any custom mixed opened or used cans of paint, Menards may offer an exchange for a similar product but keep in mind that the final decision will be made by the store manager. This means that it’s at the discretion of the store manager to accept or deny any return.
In any such cases, always remember to bring your original receipt, as it will help them process your complaints quickly if they can.
For special orders or mixed paint returns, there is also a 25% restocking fee based on the company’s policy. So, if you’re planning to return or exchange such paints, be prepared to pay this fee.
It’s also essential to bear in mind that all exchanges and returns must be done at the store where you made the purchase. You cannot mail back the product and expect a refund or exchange for the items.
Time Limits for Returns
Most paints, stains, and paint supplies returns have a 90-day limit. But there are specific items (like contractor paint sprayers) that must be returned within 30 days. And you should have them in the same new, unused, and unopened condition as when you bought them.
If you aren’t very sure, you can find the return policy period by checking the store’s receipt you have. Most of the time, it’s printed on the bottom of the receipt. For time limits and policies on products other than paints, you can check their page here.
No Receipt or Late Paint Returns
If you want to return new or unused paint without an original receipt, a Menards store associate can help you as long as they have proof that the paint was purchased there.
You are qualified for store credit rather than a refund; nonetheless, the value of the store credit will be equivalent to the paint’s lowest selling price.
Furthermore, if you return any item bought past the deadline, you will only be able to get store credit. If you paid using a gift certificate or store credit, the refund (in the form of store credit) should include the full cost of the purchased item as long as you have an original receipt.

What Brands of Paint Do Menards Carry?
Menards, in their physical as well as online stores, sell a range of different paint brands such as:
- Dutch Boy® Paints
- Pittsburgh Paints & Stains®
- Varathane® Interior Wood Coatings
- Zinsser® SmartCOAT®
Especially the Dutch Boy Paints at Menards are worth looking at and are good at the price they are available. They also have a wide variety of colors to choose from, and the sheen/finishes are also pretty good.
Although not premium quality, as you will find at Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore (that are sold at other stores and not Menards), they are still mid-grade paints for smaller low-budget projects.
The other brands, such as Pittsburgh Paints & Stains, Varathane, and Zinsser, are also good quality paints but a bit on the pricier side when compared to Dutch Boy.
Does Menards Do Curbside Pick-up – How Does it Work?
Yes, MENARDS.COM® do offer free curbside pick-up for many items, including paint, wood stain, varnishes, wallpaper, and much more.
To use Menards’ curbside pick-up service, simply select your items online, place the order, and pick your items as scheduled.
- You will get an email once your order is processed, telling you that it is ready to be picked up.
- You may enter the yard through the gate or collect your order at the store.
- Generally, you will need to go to one of the Guest Order Pickup locations in the shop.
Please bring either a printout or an electronic copy of the email to the store when you are picking up your order.
Also remember that – after you’ve been notified that your purchase is ready, you have 14 days to collect it. If you do not pick up your order during this time, it will be returned to the sales floor after that.

Lowes vs. Home Depot vs. Menards – Which is the Cheapest?
I know of many people who love to shop at Menards rather than Lowe’s or Home Depot simply because the products are relatively cheaper here. On items for house improvement, I have also discovered that Home Depot is slightly expensive.
That being said, I usually prefer to shop at Home Depot and Lowe’s as I feel their customer service is slightly better than Menards. Maybe it’s just because of one of my bad personal experiences when I bought some lumber for my fireplace last year at Menards; I can’t say exactly.
The other thing I have found why Menards can offer such a low price is its rebate policies. They usually do not give away straight cash as a discount. But it usually comes to you via mail-in rebate forms which can be used for future purchases at Menards.
So, if you do not mind waiting for the rebate, and if you regularly shop after carefully checking the prices and discounts, you can save quite a lot of money at Menards.
What Else Does Menards Sell – What are Their Private Label Brands?
Most people living in the United States are aware of Menards as a retailer that specializes in selling home improvement, tools, and construction materials.
What many people do not know, however, is that Menards also sells a wide range of other items, including groceries, pet supplies, garden supplies, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, and even clothing.
You can also find a huge variety of cabinets, doors, windows, toilets, carpets, vinyl, linoleum, automotive, propane, and home appliances cush as ceiling fans, light fixtures, microwaves, refrigerators, etc.
In addition to the products that Menards sells under its own name, the company also manufactures and sells a number of private-label brands.
Some of their most popular private label brands are Masterforce® (used for tools) along with DAKOTA™, Mastercraft®, Grip Fast, Tuscany, Tool Shop, and Enchanted Garden™/Enchanted Forest.

Does Menards take old paint for disposal?
Since paints and chemicals are hazardous in nature, Menard’s paint guarantee policy does not include the pick-up and disposal of old paint from your home.
Customers who wish to dispose of their paint supplies must take them to their appropriate local household hazardous waste (HHW) facility for proper handling and disposal.
If you are still unsure, you can check with your local officials at Menard’s customer support department for information about the best way to dispose of your particular product.
How often does Menards mark down their items?
The frequency of markdowns at Menards varies from store to store and also depends on the item.
However, you can typically expect clearance items to be marked down every two weeks or so. Items in the clearance aisle are typically discounted by anywhere from 10% to 50%.
How much does Menards charge to install the front door?
The installation service costs at Menards will vary depending on the location, door size, and the number of doors to be installed.
The average cost of a storm door, for example, is around $150 – $750 without installation. This is lower than other top brands that sell front doors.
To get an accurate quote for installation, it’s best to visit your local Menards store and speak with a customer service representative.
The bottom line
Menards is an excellent store for people looking to save money on paints, home improvement, and construction supplies. The key to shopping here is to carefully compare prices and rebates before making a purchase.
Regarding paint returns, Menards may not accept returns on opened paint cans but will refund the purchase price if you are unsatisfied with the color or quality of the new, unopened paint.
If you still have any questions about the Menards return policy, don’t hesitate to get in touch with their customer service department for more information.
