making black color paint at home

If you’re a passionate DIYer, painter, crafter, or home decor enthusiast, chances are you’ll come across situations where black is the required paint color, but none is on hand.

Don’t fret; the same has happened to me many times. Fortunately, there’s an easy and fast way to get the job done: mixing different primary and secondary colors together. Doing so will help achieve that beloved shade of black in no time – perfect for those tight deadlines.

If you want to make black paint at home, the easiest way is to combine equal parts of red, yellow, and blue paint in a palette or can. Using complementary colors such as green and red, orange and blue, and purple and yellow will generate deep black hues too. But you could also create it by mixing brown with blue – simply start mixing colors until you have reached the desired hue.

In this comprehensive guide, I will reveal the secrets to crafting a perfect black paint with just a few mixing techniques. So, why not, get ready for expert-level painting…

Making Black Color Paint at Home Without Black

Hard to believe, but the world of decor and craftsmanship offers over a hundred different shades of black. You don’t have to be stuck with whatever is available at the store – you can make your own customized shade right in your home for projects tailored just for you.

Let’s dive into some of the top techniques that are suited for all types of paint – from oil and latex to watercolors or acrylics. No matter what surface you’re looking to decorate with color – be it a wall, furniture piece, or canvas – these methods will work wonders.

Method 1 – Mixing Red, Yellow, and Blue to Make Black Paint

Black is known to be the darkest of all colors but bear in mind that the final result will depend on what blend of red, blue, and yellow you decide to use.

If, for example, a softer black is desired, add more blues or reds; for an electric black, add impressive amounts of yellow.

To begin with, experiment by gradually increasing each color until your desired shade appears.

  1. Mix a small amount of red, blue, and yellow paint to create a muddy brown mixture.
  2. Add more blue paint to the mixture to get a black hue.
  3. Then add more red or yellow paint as needed to adjust the hue of the black. And continue mixing the colors thoroughly until you achieve a consistent shade of black that you’re happy with.

If, after mixing, you find the mixture too dark, you can add white paint to lighten the value of the black shade before decorating your walls or other surfaces.

Method 2 – Mixing Blue and Brown to Make the Color Black

To achieve success with this method, it is essential to accurately identify the blue-to-brown paint ratio.

A good rule of thumb is to: combine one part of blue paint and one part of brown paint together for a perfectly balanced hue.

  1. Start by mixing a small amount of blue and brown paint to create a muddy black mixture.
  2. Add more blue tint to the mixture until you see a rich black shade forming according to your preference.
  3. You can then add more brown paint as needed to adjust the hue of the black you desire to get for your project.

Method 3- Mixing Complementary Colors to Make Black Paint Color

When paint colors on opposite sides of the color wheel are mixed, they cancel out each other’s color properties and create a dark tone.

We will apply this same principle here – to make our black paint by mixing complementary colors.

Remember, the darker the colors you start with, the easier it will be to achieve a deep black shade.

  1. To start, mix a small amount of two colors that are complementary to each other on the color wheel.
  2. For example, you can mix red and green, blue and orange, or yellow and purple.
  3. As you combine the two colors, you should start to see them cancel each other out and create a dark black color.
  4. If the color isn’t dark enough, add more of one or both colors until you achieve the desired shade.

How Do You Make Black Paint with Household Items?

If you want to go all-natural, there are a few different ways to mix and make black paint with just a few household items and mixing techniques.

One of my favorite ways is to mix flour, salt, and water. Rachelle at tinkerlab.com has explained this recipe, in which you will need to add all the ingredients along with liquid watercolor or food coloring (black for our purpose here).

The prepared paint is exceptionally safe, so your kids can use it for their craft projects or other home decor purposes without exposure to toxic chemicals.

Another way to make black paint at home is to use earth pigments, and linseed oil, along with a few other items. The recipe and process are tricky, but the black paint prepared by this technique can be used on wood surfaces, outdoor projects, and so on.

The third option to make black paint at home is to mix equal parts vinegar, baking soda, and activated charcoal. Mix and stir the ingredients together in a bowl. Add a few drops of water until you get a thick paste that resembles a paint consistency. If it’s too thick, add more water to thin it out as needed.

TIP: When painting flat outdoor surfaces, it is best to steer clear of DIY homemade black paint since it may be prone to washing off.

Can You Make Black Color Paint at Home with Grey Paint?

Since gray is so versatile and readily available, many people doubt if they can actually use it to make black paint.

Unfortunately, because gray compromises white, you won’t be able to combine it with other colors to create a vivid black.

If, however, you want to turn gray into bold black by using the black color itself, it can be done. Simply add black paint to the gray (or the mixture of white and black) until you achieve the desired darker shade of gray that resembles black.

The technique can work with watercolors, oil paints, or acrylics. But not for markers, pencils, or any other type of dry media. Additionally, this won’t work if you’re trying to lighten a dark color; in that case, it’s best to mix white paint with the original color.

A Few Things to Keep In Mind

When you mix colors, the resulting shade can sometimes slightly differ from what you expected.

The fact is, most of the time, mixing the paints will be tricky, and you may want to experiment with a variety of different color combinations to find the perfect shade of black paint for your needs.

So, in my opinion, if you urgently need a specific shade of black for an important project, you are better off purchasing the black paint from a store than preparing it at home.

With the above different methods, you should be able to get pretty close to the color you are looking for, but it may not be an exact match. Additionally, these methods should only be used for smaller projects, as buying all the necessary colors can be expensive.

Finally, when combining colors, it is essential to use a clean palette/container and brush for each new color to avoid muddying the shades.
