Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota Target is a large American retail chain that offers big-box store formats, as well as smaller shops near college campuses and in urban areas.
Its key market differs from other big box stores (like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s) in gender, income levels, and preferred store format/staging/pricing.
When it comes to paints, Target doesn’t carry a huge variety, as you can see in stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. But for their targeted customers, they still have a few selections available that can do the job very well for them.
What Paint Supplies Does Target Carry?
From my findings, Target usually carries Rust-Oleum paint for home decor and crafts which includes Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint, Rust-Oleum Milk Paint, and Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain in different shades. The prices for these paint and primer items at Target range from about $27.99 to $63.99.
Besides that, Target also carries Spray Paints from Rust-Oleum that are available in different colors and sheens (like glossy, matte, metallic, etc.). These are usually preferred options for arts, crafts, and smaller woodworking projects.
Plus, they have a few options for Rust-Oleum’s wall paints as well, but not as many as their other products. Based on your home improvement or crafting projects, you can also get a good variety of painter’s tapes, mini roller kits, respirators, and Arteza colors at a Target online store.
Keep in mind that paint supplies available in-store may vary by location and also from the products they sell online on the Target website. So, it’s always good to call and check with your local store before heading out.
Why Does Target Have So Less Variety of Paint?
This is simply because “Target’s average customer is a woman who is 39 years old, white, married, with a household income of $80,000,” – according to Business Insider.
To be more specific, Target’s primary market is women who are 18 years old up to those in their mid-40s. This differs from Walmart’s target customer base, which typically consists of similarly female and upper-middle-class people but slightly older individuals ranging from the late 40s to 50s.
So, as you can see, women between 18 and 40 are more inclined towards arts, crafting, and other activities that need smaller containers of paint which is why Target has a limited but good selection of Rust-Oleum paints.
If you are seriously into arts and crafts or require larger containers for your home improvement projects, you might want to look into other stores like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. For smaller projects, Target’s premium variety and the brands they sell are more than enough.
However, if you’re looking for an alternative to Target’s wall paint, there are other stores that might have the better variety you’re looking for. The selection of these stores includes Michaels, Sherwin-Williams, Behr, and Benjamin Moore. You can find a wide variety of colors, sheens, and painting supplies at these stores. They also have online sites where you can order the products and have them shipped to your home.

What’s the Best Time to Shop at Target for Stock Availability?
The timing of Target’s stock shipments to stores around the nation varies but typically occurs overnight between 12 am and 6 am (when the stores are closed).
Target is, therefore, less crowded and has more merchandise available in the early mornings from Monday through Friday, typically between 8 am and 10 am.
However, you will also find that Target is also many times quieter in the evenings after 8 pm, but there may be less stock on the shelves at that time.
In order to prevent issues with unavailable items, you can try calling your local store to see if they have some specific items in stock before visiting the place.
Also, note that it’s best to purchase your stuff at Target when there is a clearance sale going on which usually happens at the end of every season when they offer anywhere from 15% to 70% off on seasonal items.
Sometimes the clearance prices may differ from store to store and from time to time. Plus, the discounts at the store can go as high as 90% off the original price on selected products. So, it’s best to keep an eye on it.
Downloading a Target App or joining a Target Circle loyalty program will help you be informed of the latest deals and offers, along with any current clearance items online or in-store.
You can also sign up for Target’s REDcard, which gives you 5% off on every purchase, along with free two-day shipping on most items ordered from Target.com. Plus, you also get an extra 30 days to return items (as opposed to the standard 14 days).
What is Target Mostly Known For – Other Things You Can Buy Here?
Target (owned by the Target Corporation) is a general merchandise retailer with stores in 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Their tagline and slogan speak about them, which is, “Expect More. Pay Less.”
Target has an impressive following of devoted women shoppers, and it’s no surprise that their beauty and home essentials lineup brings in the biggest profits. However, at their full grocery shop as well as general merchandise stores you can also find a large range of clothing, shoes, electronics, sports gear & outdoor items – along with luggage and so much more.
Some of the famous brands that have a partnership with Target are Art Class, Room Essentials, Mondo Llama, Market Pantry, Opalhouse, Casaluna, Bright room, Smith & Hawken, Project 62, Made By Design, Kona Sol, and many more.
To sum it up,
If you are searching for quality wall paints Target can be an ideal choice. Offering primarily Rust-Oleum brand products, this store has all your basic needs to complete any craft or art project with ease.
However, if you wish to have an even more extensive range of options than what Target offers, Home Depot and Lowe’s may be better suited for fulfilling these requests.
